Every year in Utah, organizations around the state host events to honor Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month. In the run-up to this year’s celebration in May, the Utah SHPO is highlighting great partners and successful events. Here we speak to Chris Merritt, Utah State Historic Preservation Officer, about one of his events from May 2024.
Fort Douglas Walking Tour By Utah SHPO
Tell us about your event.
Each year I host at least one walking tour on the grounds of Fort Douglas. We start at the Fort Douglas Military Museum and walk around the grounds of the historic fort.
Were there any challenges you ran into?
There was pretty low registration and a lot of no-shows last year, so this year I pushed the invitations further and to more venues. Also, we encouraged those on the waiting list to attend, and this helped with the issue of no-shows.
What do you love about this event?
Those who come to the event are often really motivated and passionate, and they ask really good questions!
