Join the Utah SHPO Team for a day of service out on the Transcontinental Railroad Grade!
We will work on two projects near the ghost town of Kelton, near Corrinne, Utah under the direction of Dr. Chris Merritt, State Historic Preservation Officer. Chris is the leading expert Utah’s Transcontinental Railroad and volunteers are certain to learn a lot while helping to preserve and protect an important historical site.
Wheeler Monument:
This Monument is really cool, but has become overgrown and the interpretive sign is faded beyond usability. At this location volunteers will:
1) Remove vegetation within 10′ of the fence and monument
2) Tear down the existing fence
3) Replace fence with wooden posts and rails (concrete), 10′ x 10′ enclosure
4) Put down gravel at the drive-in side to make it look decent/presentable
5) Hang new interpretive sign on top of existing wooden sign.
Kelton Cemetery:
This historic cemetery serviced the town of Kelton in it’s hey-day and it needs some volunteers to give it a little extra love. At this location volunteers will:
1) Light vegetation removal in and around the cemetery
2) Trash cleanup
3) Other miscellaneous clean up
We need volunteers to make this day a success! We will provide materials, good company, and refreshments. Volunteers need only bring:
- Leather gloves
- Hats/jackets/
- Water/Snacks
If you are interested in participating, please email Chris Merritt ([email protected]) to hold your spot!
