The Uintah Basin is a prominent home for Gilsonite mining and is one of the largest Gilsonite deposits in the world. Many mid-nineteenth century mining towns still have remnants of the once booming areas they were and are frequently visited by outdoor recreationalists exploring the public land. UCSS stewards are joining the Vernal BLM archaeologists this month to document some of these sites for the very first time, starting the process of hardening the sites and developing educational resources for more visitation from the public. This is a site stewardship exclusive event, if you would like to learn more about the UCSS program and how to get involved, visit ushpo.utah.gov/ucss
