Ogden High History
Completed in 1937, Ogden High School stands as a premier example of Art Deco architecture in Utah. Ogden has several outstanding examples of this style, including the Municipal Building and United States Forest Services Buildings. Designed by Leslie S. Hodgson of the firm Hodgson and McClenahan, Ogden High School was a major undertaking of the Public Works Administration during the Great Depression. Costing over $1 million, the "Million Dollar School" was hailed as the "masterpiece" of Hodgson’s four-decade career.
Architecturally, the building is distinguished by its tan brick exterior, glazed terra cotta trim, and intricate geometric masonry. While it utilizes the vertical bands and decorative spandrels typical of Art Deco, its unique horizontal massing and asymmetrical layout set it apart from traditional prototypes. Beyond its aesthetic value, the school serves as a monument to federal recovery efforts and local resilience during the 1930s.
By the early 2000s, the school was faced with a choice between demolition or restoration. The Ogden community passionately rallied to fund a $64-million rehabilitation of their iconic 1930s Art Deco high school. The project meticulously restored historic features like the auditorium’s hand-painted ceiling—using techniques and tools authentic to the 1930s—while modernizing the facility with structural upgrades and new science labs. This massive effort, supported by both public bonds and private donations, successfully preserved a beloved civic treasure to meet 21st-century educational needs. Ogden High School was awarded a Preservation Honor Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for this rehabilitation.
Thank you to Ogden High for hosting the Preservation Engaged conference this year!
